Sewing Organization - My Continual Struggle

Here it is! The new year. I don’t know about you, but I have decided not to do the same old New Year’s Resolutions. Keeping them can take the joy out of a new year. This year I have decided to make a theme for the entire year. This year’s theme is Betterment and Improvement. I mean that could be anything! Making better food choices. Learning how to bake a better cookie. Organize the basement. Become a step closer to a responsible adult. The possibilities are endless! At the end of the year, you can list all the improvements you made and see how much you did in 12 months.

To start, I decided on an impossible task. So already I regret my life decisions. I am going to get my sewing room organized. I don’t know about you, but the organization in my sewing room seems to get destroyed anytime I start on a new and exciting project. This year, I have a whole room dedicated to my sewing endeavors now that I moved my office desk out of there. And I want this space to be clean and organized so I can start creating my own sewing patterns! So here it goes. This will be a multi storied blog post as this is going to be an adventure.

First, it took a while to get going as I needed help breaking down one room to move my day job work desk. Fortunately, I have friends who came over and helped me to move everything in 15 minutes. It was a fantastic flurry of activity where the dogs got all sorts of excited and I saw how much fur was on my floor. Kinda embarrassing but they all have dogs too. So I will just regress that on down to think about at 2:00 am in about 5 years time.

Now that my room was more clear, I bought more shelves to put up in the corner. Here I can store things when I am not using them. The hard part, I am sure, will be actually putting things back where they belong and not cluttering up the space. Right now everything looks clean and in order. Now I know what you are thinking, why did you put your serger up there, what is in that box, and where can I get a Doxi Box? There is no way you are thinking about the gummie bear skeleton.

So I use my serger with every project, but my desk is rather small and I don’t need it out all the time. So I decided to make space on a shelf. The collection of scissors needed a bigger spot, but lets be honest, I can pair down what I have. You may do the same thing as I do - start a project and you just don’t finish in time for when you need it. That box has a pair of pants and a repurposeful project. I will finish them. Someday. That Doxi Box I found at Joanns and right now it holds things to make jewelry. Nothing fancy - just the 90’s hemp necklaces I still wear! Okay and the gummie bear skeleton I got because I think it is disturbingly cute!

Now let's look at the ironing station. I have hemp string put up so I can hang pattern instructions up there. It is a great spot for me to gaze upon that Simplicity pattern that makes no sense. As I am ironing, I can puzzle out what I need to do next. Though no joke - those Simplicity patterns can be the worst! I am always attracted to what they are supposed to look like tho! Anyway, you can also see the light I need since my overhead light would cast a shadow. The ironing board can be moved around as well.

My beautiful desk looks so clean and in order. I obviously just wiped that down and cleared off everything to make you think that I am a well organized adult. The sketch book is there for me to doodle my fashion ideas into, the thread is there for my next fantastic make, and I have yet another light so I can see what I am doing much better. Which i realize you cannot see this but it is there… in the left upper corner. It is an amazing light and this picture does it no justice.

Now I had this whole other thing that I was going to do at this time where I show you what is behind me and to the right. As well as what I had in the dining room. Oh and let’s not even mention the closet. Seriously… do not think about that closet. I try not to. But I think this has gone on long enough and let us end this organization journey on a good note. The rest will be done and shared in the following weeks. For now, think about how you would organize your sewing space and maybe drop a line below to let me know how it is going for you!

Cheers my friends and Happy New Year!
